The Data Engineer will play a key role in contributing to the success of data integration, data management & architecture, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence projects across the company, by partnering with respective business owners and leveraging data to identify areas of improvement & optimization. S/he will build deliverables like business process automation, equipment health monitoring tools, demand forecasting models, prescriptive energy optimization systems etc. that provide edge to business decision making and can scale with growth. The role sits in the sweet spot between technology and business worlds and provides opportunity for growth, high business impact and working with seasoned business leaders.


  • Lead and consult technical strategy on the Phillips 66 Deep Learning and big data landscape implementation

  • Lead data modeling & architecture code design reviews to ensure quality, strategy and performance and maintain detailed documentation that captures Phillips 66 data strategy for data mining, data modeling, data pipelines, data integration and computational models

  • Facilitate modeling & architecture sessions and design walk throughs with development team members

  • Build end-to-end solutions to solve high value business needs in a sustainable, innovative manner

  • Develop and maintain big data models using Phillips 66 data modeling strategy; develop overall design, and implementation of SQL scripts, stored procedures, cursors, triggers, data pipelines, designing data distribution strategy

  • Design R models, data models, data pipelines, data distribution code for advanced analytics to be utilized across multiple data platforms like HANA, IQ, Hadoop, Azure DW, Redshift, EMR (Elastic Map Reduce)

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts on complex performance tuning problems within Philips 66 data technologies platform and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious

  • Demonstrate ability to determine which Phillips 66 data engines and data solutions should be utilized for a customer requirement considering performance, volume and cost

  • Ability to review the codes and ensure quality, best practices and standards are followed

  • Identify and understand components performance contributions (SQL, Python, code, servers, networks, volume of data, data I/O throughput, type of data)

  • Educate and lead developers by using expertise to help educate less experienced team members

  • Review custom code and identify and implement performance improvement measures (e.g. parallelization, code – push down, data model’s optimization, query optimization

  • Ability to create data assets for Philips 66 using data catalog

  • Demonstrate data mining, data discovery and data visualization techniques to present highly visual insight into data

  • Develop predictive, prescriptive analytics algorithm utilizing data technologies to meet business requirements

  • Communicate and articulate model designs to peers, customers and governance team; demonstrate BI (Business Intelligence) analytical tools against Phillips 66 data to complete data validation and customer UAT (User Acceptance Testing)

  • Work across business/technology teams to ensure alignment between business solution definition & technical architecture to meet project requirements

  • Reduce IT technical debt by promotion of best practices for sustainable IT system design

  • Improve the architecture by consulting with project architects, promoting innovative approaches, and sharing knowledge

  • Demonstrate the ability to provide views of data using Tableau and BI suite; demonstrate knowledge of wide variety of data technologies such as S4HANA, SAP BW4HANA, SAP ERP, EMR, Athena, HDInsight, Azure DW, Data pipelines, SRS, Informatica, Tableau

  • Ensure that per Phillips 66 policies that when data is brought in landscape that the appropriate data contracts are executed with customer

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electronics & Telecommunication, Engineering, Math, Statistics, or Physical Sciences

  • 5 or more years relevant work experience in software development in analytics and data management solutions

  • Able to understand the diverse business requirements and be able to translate those requirements into applicable solutions

  • Experience in building and designing systems on cloud providers either Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform

  • Data fundamentals, analytics, data warehousing, data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, etc.

  • Proficiency in, at least, one modern programming language such as SQL, R, Java, Scala, or Python

  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle, including Agile methodologies, coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

  • Knowledge of data management fundamentals and data storage principles

  • Knowledge of distributed systems as it pertains to data storage and computing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7 or more years relevant work experience in analytics, data warehousing and data management solutions

  • 3 or more years of experience in analytics role in the Oil & Gas Industry

  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure or AWS

  • Strong client focuses and management of client expectations

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent teamwork skills

  • Ability to present and explain technical information to diverse audiences

  • Ability to write clear proposals and technical documents
